Background: Stephanie Plum is a 30 year-old woman who is half Italian and have Hungarian and lives in Trenton, New Jersey. She grew up in the Chambersburg neighbourhood (aka 'the Burg') and attened Douglass College where Stephanie graduated 'without distinction.' After graduation, Stephanie married Dickie Orr and then divorced him after discovering he cheated on her with her rival Joyce Barnhardt.

She got a job working as a lingerie buyer, but she was fired from her job. This led her to blackmailing her cousin Vinnie (who owns Vincent Bail Bonds) into giving her a job as an apprehension agent (aka bounty hunter). She is single and lives with her hamster, Rex, in a one bedroom apartment - an apartment building with predominantly elderly neighbours.

She visits her parents (who still live in the Burg) for meals, 'family time,' and pineapple upside-down cake. Since getting her job as a bounty hunter, she's been kidnapped, threatened, had houses burn down (including a funeral home she protests she didn't start), and otherwise embarrassed herself on countless occasions - but what are you going to do?


Personality: Stephanie Plum briefly describes herself in the first chapter of each book, typically mentioning her Italian-Hungarian descent, fast metabolism, brown curly hair, (sometimes described as red), and blue eyes. While she might be a bounty hunter, she's not very good and often relies on lucky more than skill to capture her FTAs (Fail to Appear). She has a temper which she blames on her heritage and has a mean hate for her ex-husband Dickie and for Joyce. Stephanie copes with embarrassment pretty good and can summon up bravery when she really needs to (though most of the time this is masqued by petrifying fear). She's in love with two men, Morelli, her Italian-cop boyfriend, and Ranger, a Spanish mystery man. She has a hard time choosing between them and this probably comes from her commitment issues.


Stephanie Plum is infamous for destroying cars, for which she has been dubbed the "Bombshell Bounty Hunter" in the local paper. Over time, Plum has had to resort to taking a truck with a bad radiator, a mismatch of two cars called a Rollswagon, and most frequently, her Uncle Sandor's seemingly indestructible powder blue '53 Buick Roadmaster, aka "Big Blue" that now belongs to Grandma Mazur.
